The Joys of Working

by Al March 29, 2026
written by Al

I worked a lot of different jobs in the software industry over the years. I mostly wrote code to control electro-mechanical devices, such as robots, X-ray machines, airport security scanners, and many other similar devices. At most of the places that I worked I was a direct hire, receiving a flat salary, getting benefits, and, at the end of the year, a W2 form. I also worked a number of jobs as a contractor where I would be paid by the hour, have some control over the hours that I worked, and was able to deduct expenses incurred while working. I liked working as a contractor; I felt a little less owned, and it seemed like a much fairer deal …

The Danny Thomas Show – Tonoose Needs Glasses

by Al March 28, 2026
written by Al

just watched an episode of the TV show, ‘The Danny Thomas Show’. It’s a late-season 10 episode, and the show is nearing the end of its run, with season 11 being the final season. You can tell that all the major players are burnt out and ready to move on. Danny Thomas and Marjorie Lord have checked out and, to minimize their involvement in the show, are said to be touring Europe. While a couple of the episodes feature the two of them, most of the episodes in Season 10 begin with them receiving either a letter or a phone call from a family member, which they read as an introduction to a problem occurring at home. From there, it …

According to Jim

by Al March 27, 2026
written by Al

I watched the final episode of ‘According to Jim’ yesterday. I had to rush through the last few episodes since Amazon informed me a few days ago that they were soon to leave the platform. This has happened to me before. I was in the middle of binge-watching ‘The Twilight Zone’ when, with little notice, Amazon pulled it from its streaming service. This gets frustrating. I’ll decide I want to watch a show, watch a single episode each day, and then the dreaded notice appears saying that ‘xxx is leaving in x days. Amazon claims that their policy is a 14-day notice, but I’m not sure I believe them. Often, it seems like shows leave with just a few days’ …

Guilty Pleasure – Snake Videos

by Al March 26, 2026
written by Al

There are two things I try to avoid as much as possible since I find them extremely addictive. One is video games. Once I start playing a video game, I’m hooked. I’ll play all day long, day after day, trying to reach the next level, working towards the ultimate goal of defeating the final boss. Since I’m not a particularly good player, this can take weeks, if not months. As enjoyable and as tempting as it is, I’ve avoided going down that rabbit hole by just not playing the games. I have a large collection of games I’ve acquired over the years, and maybe someday, when I’m extremely old and have nothing else going on in my life, I’ll break …

The Big Arch Hype

by Al March 25, 2026
written by Al

The last few weeks, it seems like every where I go on the Internet I’m being assaulted with reviews of the new McDonald’s Big Arch. In case you’ve somehow missed all the hype, the Big Arch is a double burger topped with three cheese slices, lettuce, onions, pickles and Big Arch sauce, which the marketing department describes as ‘tangy, creamy, with the perfect balance of mustard, pickle and sweet tomato flavors.’ Depending where you live the Big Arch will cost you anywhere from $7.46 to $12.99. The even bigger price is the number of calories it contains, which comes in at a whopping 1020. I’ve posted an article in the past about how much I hate McDonald’s. Their food is …

Configuring N3FJP Logger for use with the Yaesu FTDX101D

by Al March 24, 2026
written by Al

I’m continuing my series of articles that describe how to configure various ham radio software applications to work with the Yaesu FTDX101D. All of the things I’m describing here are available on various sites and videos around the Internet, but I wanted to show what I did to make it work because it’s a real world example that might just help someone else going through the same process. As I’ve said in previous articles, even though this is written for the Yaesu FTDX101D, the same information most likely will work on any modern Yaesu radio and, with a few changes, should work on non-Yaesu radios as well. If you haven’t done so yet, you should read my previous article, ‘Installing …

Civilization Under Attack

by Al March 23, 2026
written by Al

This was posted in the comments section of a New York Post article. It was written by someone calling themselves Not_A_Lib DonkeypoxIsKillingAmerica and I think it expresses what a lot of us feel. we are a society circling the drain… Today’s generation is the inevitable product of decades of liberal indoctrination, soft parenting, and a media culture that prizes emotion over intellect. They’ve been spoon-fed victimhood, wrapped in moral superiority, and taught to mistake ignorance for virtue. The result? A generation that’s both arrogant and uninformed — loud enough to preach, but too shallow to think. Social media has crowned this generation’s new prophets: influencers and activists whose only qualifications are vanity and outrage. The self-proclaimed “enlightened” class now leads …

Leonid & Friends

by Al March 22, 2026
written by Al

Leonid & Friends are a Russian band that achieved a cult following in the USA from people watching their YouTube videos. We’ve seen them multiple times now and they always put on a good show. If you get the opportunity to see them, go for it. This is a video I took from the first time we saw them back in 2019 at Plymouth Memorial Hall. At that time they mostly did covers from the band Chicago but they have since moved on to perform other music from bands such as Earth, Wind and Fire and Blood Sweat and Tears.

Tuning My Piano

by Al March 21, 2026
written by Al

A few years back I started to tune my own piano. Before I retired, I had lots of money and little time so it made sense to have someone else do the job. Since retiring, the equation has changed, now I have lots of time and less money so it makes sense to do it myself. I was a little hesitant at first since it seemed pretty complex and there was a lot of potential for things to go wrong. I have a pretty decent quality Italian/Germany Schulze Pollmann piano and it would be a shame to destroy it if things went horribly wrong, but being a typical guy, I jumped in and hoped for the best. Turns out, while …

The Way Things Work

by Al March 20, 2026
written by Al

I was reading about Ali Larijani’s daughter, Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, a professor at Emory University, who just flew back to Iran from the United States to attend her fathers funeral. Ali Larijani, according to Wikipedia, was an Iranian military officer and the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. He was also one of the two representatives of the Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei to the council. He was also described as the country’s de facto leader. Larijani was killed on March 17 by an Israeli airstrike. In the comments section of the article, I wrote the following: I was in college during the Iranian hostage situation. I was an engineering major and our classes were filled with Iranian students …
